NTN 1114 - Principles of Biochemistry & Genetics

This course offers a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental concepts of biochemistry and genetics, equipping students with a solid foundation for future studies in biology, medicine, or related fields. Biochemistry explores the chemical processes that underpin life, focusing on the structure, function, and interactions of biological molecules such as carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, DNA, RNA, enzymes, hormones, and vitamins. Students will gain a deep understanding of how these molecules contribute to cellular processes. Genetics focuses on the molecular mechanisms by which genetic information encoded in DNA is transmitted and expressed. By studying both biochemistry and genetics, students will develop a strong grasp of the basic structures, functions, and interactions of biological molecules. This knowledge will serve as a foundation for exploring metabolic pathways in subsequent semesters.

This course aims,

1. To provide the fundamental biological chemistry of living systems.

2. To give an appreciation of the structures of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and vitamins, their properties and reactions.

3. To provide basic characteristics of hormones and enzymes.

4. To develop basic understanding of molecular genetics and genetic epidemiology of multifactorial diseases.

On successful completion of this course the students should be able to:

1. Illustrate the major features of structure and functions of cell and cell organelles.

2. Define chemical properties of macro and micro molecules.

3. Distinguish diversity of biomolecules and their metabolic and structural roles in cellular function.

4. Describe how chemical reactions are mediated, integrated and regulated in the cells.

5. Explain the involvement of genetic information in utilization of nutrients and how genetic information are transmitted from generation to generation.

6. Use laboratory tests for determining the various properties of macro and micro-molecules.

Continuous evaluation system and end-semester examination will be adopted. Marks allocation is as follows:
